Decorative Concrete
This is the broad category for any technique that transforms plain, gray concrete into an aesthetically pleasing surface. It’s an umbrella term that includes both polishing and staining, alongside other methods like stamping, scoring, engraving, and overlays.
Concrete Polishing
This is a mechanical process. Contractors use heavy floor grinders fitted with industrial diamond abrasives to grind down, hone, and smooth the concrete surface to a specific level of shine (from a matte finish to high gloss). It relies on the concrete itself for its sheen and durability rather than a topical coating.
Concrete Staining
This is a chemical process. Liquid colorants such as reactive acid stains or water/acetone-based dyes are applied to the concrete to penetrate the surface adding rich, earthy tones or vibrant hues. Staining changes the color, but it does not make it smooth or shiny on its own; it requires a sealer or additional finish for protection and gloss.
Stamped Concrete
Concrete stamping, often called textured or imprinted concrete, is a decorative technique where three dimensional patterns and textures are pressed into wet, freshly poured concrete before it sets. The goal is to micic the look and feel of
more expensive, natural materials—like cobblestone, slate, flagstone, brick, or even wood planks—at a fraction of the cost.
